Hayley Atwell - Television - The Pillars Of The Earth

From Baz Bamigboye's Daily Mail column:
"Hayley Atwell will play the heroine of Ken Follett's complex adventure story The Pillars Of The Earth when it begins filming this summer.

The actress will go directly from appearing with Ken Stott and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in Lindsay Posner's sublime production of Arthur Miller's View From The Bridge and into medieval mode as the noblewoman Aliena in Follett's sprawling tale about the building of a magnificent cathedral in the fictional Kingsbridge.

Follett said he had in mind Wells and Salisbury Cathedrals when he wrote his novel.

Shooting on the fourpart mini series, adapted for the screen by John Pielmeir and directed by Sergio Mimica Gezzan, will begin in June on locations in Hungary and Austria.

Follett sets his story of love and revenge against a backdrop of a 12th-century England ripped apart by famine, religious strife and civil war.

Follett won a huge following with The Pillars Of The Earth; it was chosen as one of the all-time 100 best books in a BBC Big Read list, and it has remained a consistent seller since it was first published 18 years ago.

Karmen Svagan of Munich-based Tandem Communications, the TV company filming the novel with Ridley and Tony Scott's production company, said other major roles were still being cast.

It's not known yet whether The Pillars Of The Earth will be sold to BBC or ITV. Hayley will be seen soon on the new TV re-working of the classic series The Prisoner."

Hayley Atwell - Theatre - A View From the Bridge

[updated 18 March 2011]

Reviews

The Guardian
"...Hayley Atwell captures well the niece's growth into a woman of spirit..."

This is London
"...The impassioned distress of Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio’s wife and Atwell’s agonised embarrassment runs counter to Stott’s fury and gives the evening its shocking, emotional dynamic.."

Daily Mail
(review by Quentin Letts) "...Lindsay Posner draws a strong ensemble performance from his cast..."

(from Baz Bamigboye's column) "...[Catherine is] beautifully captured by Ms Atwell..."

British Theatre Guide
"...Catherine is played by Brideshead Revisited star, Hayley Atwell, who made such an impression opposite Simon Russell Beale as Major Barbara and proves that it was not just a one-off... [Ken Stott] gets great support from both of the leading ladies, Hayley Atwell's bemusement and then anger almost mirroring the reactions of Miss Mastrantonio as the older, wiser Aunt..."

Morning Star Online
"...when the tragedy is as good as A View From The Bridge and the acting is as good as it is here, the impact is quite extraordinary...Ken Stott is terrific and he gets excellent support from Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as his wife, Hayley Atwell as the niece, Harry Lloyd as the lover and Allan Corduner as the lawyer who acts as chorus..."

Hayley Atwell - Theatre - A View From the Bridge

From Baz Bamigboye's Daily Mail column:
"Hayley Atwell is currently playing a number in the re-interpretation of Sixties cult TV drama, The Prisoner, but very soon she will have a name to play.

The actress will star opposite Ken Stott and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in Arthur Miller's play View From The Bridge.

She will play Catherine, with Stott and Ms Mastrantonio as her aunt and uncle.

Stott's Eddie Carbone is a Brooklyn docker whose incestuous desires for his niece bring about his downfall.

It's a fabulous play and Lindsay Posner's production begins rehearsals next month, with performances at the Duke of York's Theatre from January 22.

Producers Kim Poster and Sonia Friedman are hoping to cast Harry Lloyd as Rodolpho, who incurs Carbone's wrath when he shows a healthy interest in Catherine.

Hayley, who was in the films The Duchess and Brideshead Revisited, returns to London - just in time for rehearsals - from South Africa, where she has been starring with Ian McKellen, Jim Caviezel and Ruth Wilson in The Prisoner.

Hayley plays 4-15, a character who turns out to be a facet of another character. She lives in the weird village controlled by McKellen's No 2.

The six-part series will be broadcast on ITV next year. McKellen will be toasting Hayley's stage role during one of the regular soirees he throws for The Prisoner inmates."
