Hayley Atwell - Television - The Pillars Of The Earth

From Baz Bamigboye's Daily Mail column:
"Hayley Atwell will play the heroine of Ken Follett's complex adventure story The Pillars Of The Earth when it begins filming this summer.

The actress will go directly from appearing with Ken Stott and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in Lindsay Posner's sublime production of Arthur Miller's View From The Bridge and into medieval mode as the noblewoman Aliena in Follett's sprawling tale about the building of a magnificent cathedral in the fictional Kingsbridge.

Follett said he had in mind Wells and Salisbury Cathedrals when he wrote his novel.

Shooting on the fourpart mini series, adapted for the screen by John Pielmeir and directed by Sergio Mimica Gezzan, will begin in June on locations in Hungary and Austria.

Follett sets his story of love and revenge against a backdrop of a 12th-century England ripped apart by famine, religious strife and civil war.

Follett won a huge following with The Pillars Of The Earth; it was chosen as one of the all-time 100 best books in a BBC Big Read list, and it has remained a consistent seller since it was first published 18 years ago.

Karmen Svagan of Munich-based Tandem Communications, the TV company filming the novel with Ridley and Tony Scott's production company, said other major roles were still being cast.

It's not known yet whether The Pillars Of The Earth will be sold to BBC or ITV. Hayley will be seen soon on the new TV re-working of the classic series The Prisoner."
